about THE
JAX MEMORIAL
AUTISM FUND
The Jax Memorial Autism Scholarship Fund is led by a dedicated group of women who were deeply connected to Jax: his former behavior therapists, Jackie LaMaida and Mileena Cook; his grandmothers, Karen Ponomarenko and Janice Cherni; his aunt, Angie Ponomarenko; and his mother, Samantha Cherni.

United by loss and driven by love, they came together to honor Jax’s memory in a meaningful and lasting way. Each year, they organize community fundraisers to support the scholarship fund, providing financial assistance to families seeking resources, educational opportunities, or specialized equipment for their child with autism.

Their shared hope is that every donation—no matter the size—helps create a positive impact in the life of at least one child.

ABOUT JAX
Jax was a bright, determined five‑year‑old who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. He grew up in Parma, Ohio, and attended STEPS Academy, where his love of learning quickly became clear. When his family discovered he could read, it was evident that his potential was limitless. Although Jax had many words, he sometimes struggled to express exactly what he wanted. With the help of his speech‑generating device, he found new ways to communicate, easing his frustration and opening the door to even more connection.

Jax had a deep love for sensory experiences—especially water. Summer days spent swimming, splashing, and exploring splash pads were among his favorites. He also enjoyed visiting the park, where swinging and sliding brought him pure joy. Music was another source of happiness for Jax; the moment a song began to play, his face lit up, and he often sang along to the lyrics he knew by heart. His happiness was constant, and his radiant smile rarely left his face.

Jax’s memory continues to shine through the scholarship fund created in his honor. His legacy lives on in the opportunities provided to children with autism, and it brings comfort to know how much joy he would feel seeing the lives he continues to touch.
